Thought of Time

Thought of Time

Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas in Berlin is a solemn place. Long rows of concrete columns give a sense of ordered despair. The German word “Denkmal” is used like English’s “memorial.” Our word comes from an old Latin one meaning “placed in memory. But “Denkmal,” if literally translated would be something like “thought of time.” I like that better because memorials should be thought of in the present, in order to learn their lessons.
